Outdoor patio umbrellas paired with the bases that hold them down. This collection covers the most common sizes for a residential patio — from compact bistro shade to full 9 ft round canopies — along with the weighted bases needed to keep them upright in real Canadian summer conditions. Every umbrella and base in the collection is condition-tagged before listing. Stock turns over from spring through late summer; selection is widest in April and May, when seasonal closeouts and returns from the prior year land in our Toronto warehouse.
Choosing the right umbrella size
The diameter of a patio umbrella should generally match the surface it is shading. A 6 ft umbrella covers a small bistro table for two and works on a balcony. A 7.5 ft umbrella shades a four-seat dining table comfortably, including the chairs when people lean back. A 9 ft umbrella is the right size for a six-seat table or a deeper lounge setup, and gives enough overhang that no one sits in direct sun. Round canopies are the most common shape, with the occasional square option that fits closer to a rectangular table without overhang on one side. Beige and off-white canopies reflect more heat than dark canopies; black or dark navy show less dust but heat up faster underneath. Macrame canopies are decorative and provide partial shade through the woven pattern — intended for ambient setups rather than full UV protection.
Why the base matters more than people expect
A patio umbrella without an adequately weighted base is the most common cause of summer damage on a Canadian residential patio. Wind gusts on an exposed deck can exceed 30 km/h easily, and a 6 ft umbrella catches enough wind to tip over a 15 lb base. The general rule used by patio dealers is to match base weight to umbrella size: roughly 25 lb for a 6 ft umbrella, 35–50 lb for a 7.5 ft umbrella, and 50 lb or more for a 9 ft umbrella. Bases in this collection include steel-filled square bases and granite-filled round bases — granite gives more weight in the same footprint, which matters on small balconies where the base eats into walking space. If your table has a centre hole, the base sits under the table and stabilizes the pole through the table; freestanding bases sit on the ground and work for offset or cantilever umbrellas that have the pole on one side.
Tilt, crank, and opening mechanisms
Most patio umbrellas in this collection use a hand-crank to open and close, with a separate push-button tilt at the top of the pole for sun-angle adjustment in the afternoon. Crank mechanisms are mostly nylon-and-steel gear assemblies; the most common failure point is a slipped or stripped nylon gear from over-cranking past full open. We test the crank on every listed unit to confirm it stops at the natural full-open position and reverses smoothly. Tilt mechanisms are either button-press (single-angle tilt) or collar-crank (smooth tilt to any angle). Auto-tilt umbrellas tilt as you turn the crank past full open — convenient but harder to centre over a fixed table. The mechanism type is noted on each product page.
Conditions and inspection
Each umbrella is inspected for canopy holes, frayed seams, broken ribs, pole damage, and tilt mechanism function. Each base is inspected for cracked plastic shells, missing pole adapter sleeves, and water-tightness on filled bases. Brand New arrived in original sealed packaging. Open-Box was opened for a return but is unused. Opened for Inspection means we removed it from the packaging to verify mechanism and canopy condition. We do not list umbrellas with torn canopies, jammed crank handles, or bent ribs, and we do not list bases with cracked outer shells or compromised pole sleeves.
Shipping across Canada
Umbrellas ship telescoped or in compact boxes and arrive within standard transit times. Bases are heavy (25–50 lb) and ship in their own carton; expect oversized shipping surcharges to the prairies, BC interior, and the territories. Orders placed before 1 p.m. ET are processed within 24 business hours from our Toronto warehouse. Prices are in CAD. If you order an umbrella and a base together, we ship them in the same shipment when carrier dimensions allow.
